AC/DC: The Dave Evans Era

AC/DC had a revolving door of musicians before finding the right line-up. Although Bon Scott is often cited as the original singer, he wasn’t the first vocalist to front the iconic Aussie band. That distinction belongs to Dave Evans.

In 1974, AC/DC entered EMI recording studio to record a single for the Albert Productions record label. With Evans behind the microphone, the band recorded an early version of “Can I Sit Next To You, Girl.”

To fuel sales of the 7-inch record, a promotional video was filmed. The line-up was still very much in flux. The rhythm section in the video features musicians that did not appear on the recording. However, the real trip, is watching Dave Evans as AC/DC front man.

Evan’s short tenure with AC/DC only yielded two songs. The B-side of “Can I Sit Next To You, Girl” contained the rarity, “Rockin’ in the Parlour.”

Shortly after performing “Can I Sit Next To You, Girl” on Australian television, Dave Evans was replaced with the charismatic Bon Scott. It was a key move that transformed AC/DC into an internationally renowned band.

“Can I Sit Next To You Girl” was re-recorded with Bon and included on the T.N.T. LP. It was later added to the international version of High Voltage. AC/DC continued to perform the song live.

Dave Evans continued singing and joined the band Rabbit. With Evans at the helm, Rabbit landed a deal with CBS records and released two albums before disbanding.

Dave Evans is currently active. 2017 saw the release of Wild. The EP is Evan’s sixth solo release. Naturally, his past with AC/DC remains a part of live shows. He continues to perform “Can I Sit Next To You, Girl” along with latter day AC/DC songs conceived well after his time with the band.

Here is a little fact for you AC/DC fans:
Older brother and Band Manager George Young thought Dave Evans was to much like Gary Glitter and dumped his ass for Bon Scott. George had a vision for ACDC he knew they had something, and that something was not Gary “Child Rapist” Glitter! Thank God for such Foresight and a wise decision. Could you imagine if ACDC never made it? If they never existed? I don’t want to either!

That’s particularly amusing given that in one of their first songs, “Little Lover” off of High Voltage, Bon sings “You had my picture on your bedroom wall, pinned up next to Gary Glitter.”
